Samenvatting:
Recycling of paper for the production of new paper and cardboard produces a stream of rejects, mainly various plastics mixed with wood fibers and inorganic material. The rejects can be used as fuel with reasonably high calorific value. However, precautions have to be taken to prevent corrosion of equipment and limit flue gas emissions. The aim of the present work is to show it is possible to produce fuel gas from this waste stream and clean the gas sufficiently for use in fuel cells, which allow high efficiency power production but are notoriously sensitive to poisoning. To that end, Rofire pellets made from paper recycling rejects are converted into pyrolysis gas at 550°C. The pyrolysis gas is converted into syngas at 1300°C. Soot, Cl and S compounds are removed by hot gas cleaning. Cleaned syngas is fed to a commercial SOFC stack mounted in an ECN test facility. Over a 100 hours test period the performance of the stack has not changed, proving the gas cleaning was effective.
