Samenvatting:
In recent years more emphasis is placed on characterization of wastesince more control is needed over the long term performance of landfills. In
this work, characterization of leaching behaviour of wastes is placed in
perspective to leachate quality from many different landfills. A new
presentation of these data as a function of the main release controlling
parameter (pH) leads to new insights, in which the leachate characteristics
of landfills can be classified in chemical rather than biological terms. The
characterization also provides a basis for acceptance criteria and waste
pretreatment prior to disposal. It leads to other means to reach inherent
long term stability of landfills. 6 figs., 1 tab. 39 refs.
