Samenvatting:
From 1992 till 1994 ECN has performed research on the application ofbatteries in electric vehicles. The work concentrated on lithium batteries
with metallic lithium and LiCoO2 as active components. The results of
literature studies and experimental work are summarized. The advantages and
disadvantages of electric vehicles compared to cars with internal combustion
engines are discussed in chapter 2. Also characteristics of batteries for
electric vehicles and expected future developments are given. Chapter 3 is an
overview of literature on the main components of lithium batteries. The
experimental methods used are the subject of chapter 4. Results are
summarized in chapter 5. Most attention has been given to capacity fading
with cycling. Possible future specifications of a bipolar lithium battery are
derived from a theoretical model based on experimental results. 18 figs., 4
tabs., 58 refs.
