Samenvatting:
Waste wood from concrete processing (formwork wood) was used as a fuel inthe 70 kW wood combustion unit for central heating at ECN. Covered by a layer
of polyurethane, this wood is considered contaminated, which therefore should
be landfilled or burned in a waste incineration plant. Based on the
experimental results, the technical, economic and environmental feasibility
of small-scale combustion of formwork wood was determined. During the
experiment, data on flue gas emissions and other relevant characteristics of
the combustion process were collected to evaluate its technical performance.
The economical viability was determined for a Dutch concrete processing
company that has a waste stream of about 5 tons formwork wood daily. The
environmental performance was evaluated by comparing the measured emission
data to relevant Dutch and German emission laws. The feasibility study leads
to the conclusion that combustion of formwork wood in a 1,5 MW wood
combustion unit for central heating is technically possible if the
installation is equipped with a shredder, a magnetic separator and an
automatic ash discharge system. In the case of the Dutch concrete processing
company the installation of a 1,5 MW system is economically attractive
(including shredder, magnetic separator, automatic ash discharge system,
multicyclone). An additional amount of circa 450,000 Dutch guilders (DFl) can
be invested for additional gas cleaning equipment before reaching the
economic break-even point. The installation of an electro-filter (#+#
300,000 DFl) is recommended, measures to reduce NOx -emission should be
considered. The environmental performance of the process strongly depends on
the gas cleaning system. If the installation is equipped with a multicyclone,
an electro-filter and measures to reduce NOx -emissions, the process can be
considered environmentally friendly, although dioxin emission has not
sufficiently been taken into consideration. 13 refs.
