Samenvatting:
Gasification tests with shredded meranti and willow have been performedin order to determine the operational aspects of the circulating fluidised
bed gasifier (Dutch abbreviation is BIVKIN) at ECN. The start-up procedure
has been formalised. It appeared that the transition from combustion to
gasification is very straightforward. An instantaneous increase of the amount
of fuel leads to stable gasification conditions within minutes. The shutdown
procedure however is also simple but more risky due to the possibility of
large temperature rise during the transition from gasification to combustion.
During 'cold' tests, sand wear occurred due to the high volume flow needed to
achieve the desired gas velocity at low temperature. No substantial sand wear
was observed under gasification conditions. The feed system appeared to be
rather susceptible for the size of the fuel that was used. Larger particles
seemed more difficult to feed. Larger fuel particles gave rise to a higher
carbon conversion (>90%). The influence of dolomite and steam on the amount
of tar in the fuel gas is still uncertain due to the limited number of
samples and the uncertainty in the tar analysis method. The measured caloric
value of the fuel gas was mainly caused by the higher moisture content of the
willow. The geometry of the recirculation system appeared to be the limiting
factor for the maximal capacity. It is expected that adaption of the
recirculating system will result in a higher maximal capacity of the
installation. This adaptation however is not really necessary for scaling
predictions. 16 refs.
