Samenvatting:
Following a European Round Robin of biomass fuels and ashes with 16laboratories (including the Dutch KEMA), two Dutch institutes (ECN and TNO)
performed analyses using samples identical to the ones used for the European
project. The main goal was to judge the performance of the Dutch institutes
mentioned in comparison with a large number of European laboratories.
Furthermore, the results can be used together with the European results to
form a basis for international standards for biomass fuels and biomass ash
analyses. Four fuel samples, four ash samples and two digest solutions were
analysed in the project. Both partners were free to choose the measurement
methods. The results were evaluated during a meeting where a representative
of KEMA (one of the 16 laboratories that participated in the European
project) was also present. Where deviations from the European results
appeared to be too large, it was decided to repeat the measurement using a
different method. After this first correction, the results generally were in
good agreement with the European results. Most major deviations are due to
the fact that the values measured were close to the detection limits of the
methods used. Furthermore, it was observed that the determination of
Cl-content in both fuel and ash samples is 'difficult'. It also appeared to
be necessary to dilute some of the samples to obtain agreement with European
results as far as the concentration of Pb and Zn was concerned. This was also
observed in the European project and was attributed to the complex matrix of
the samples: minerals and organic compounds. Ash contents as measured by ECN
and TNO in the straw samples turn out to be 20-25% too high, compared to the
European results measured at the same temperature (815C). It is not clear
what causes this difference. It may be due to the extra time the samples have
been stored (about 1 year). A systematic deviation was also observed for the
concentration of elements in the ash digest solution. Here, ECN measured on
average 20% less than the laboratories within the European project. For TNO
this was 12%, for which no reason could be found. 2 figs., 5 tabs., 2 refs.,
