Samenvatting:
The aim of the title project was quantification of the reduction of solarradiation by anthropogenic aerosol in Europe by a combination of approaches. These complementary approaches were: (1) Assessment of the optical properties of the European aerosol; (2) Trend analysis of solar radiation and anthropogenic aerosol loadings; and (3) Modeling of the effect of aerosol on local radiation/climate, using parametrized aerosol, and comparison of the parametrized aerosol with measured aerosol data in Europe. The tasks of ECN were the following: Coordination of the project and editing of the final report (ECN-C-95-030): ad (1) Assessment of the light-scattering properties of the aerosol in Western Europe, combined with solar radiation measurements; ad (2) Analysis of the trend in aerosol loading in Europe; and ad (3) Measurement of aerosol size/composition. With respect to task 1, the investigation by ECN was subdivided into: the evaluation of existing data, and performing of new measurements, including assessment of the humidity dependence of the light-scattering. In this report only those aspects which have not been published before in reports and publications on the project subject are described in detail. For the subjects published earlier only the key elements are given. Additional details can be found in the ECN-reports of which the numbers are given at the end of the respective chapters. The results and conclusions of the various tasks/chapters were integrated into those of the final report (ECN-C-95-030). 16 figs., 3 tabs., 21 refs.
