Samenvatting:
The results of an experimental study on the emission of volatile organiccompounds (VOC) via gas phase transport before, during and after cementation processes is presented. Use has been made of Portland A cement, with and without active carbon addition. Loss of VOC before and during curing of the cementous product is considerable (40-70%). Cement does not immobilize VOC, with the exception of naphthalene which is retained to a minor extent. immobilization of VOC improves significantly in case VOCs are adsorbed onto active carbon granules before cementing. Therefore, the cement/active carbon material can be used for defining optimal conditions for the VOC availability test. After 28 days curing, cement/active carbon products have been applied in the VOC availability test. It was observed that no further decrease in VOC concentrations in the material could be detected after 15 days. Based on the experimental results, a text proposal is given for the laboratory determination of VOC availability from immobilized products. A VOC emission test was performed for 3 cylindrical cement products (without active carbon addition). VOC emissions were found to be strongly related to product dimension. For all products no further emission of VOC could be detected after 12 days. The final VOC concentrations in the lager test products are significantly higher as compared to the VOC availability. In general, VOC recovery was lower than 30%. No satisfactory explanation could be given for the low VOC recoveries. Therefore, a text proposal for a laboratory VOC emission test is not given. 6 figs., 8 tabs., 1 appendix, 8 refs.
