Samenvatting:
This study on behalf of Royal Haskoning is meant to provide an overview of the potential of renewable energy in the Netherlands in 2020, in particular on the extent to which new renewable energy options could provide an alternative for the envisioned 6000 MW offshore wind on the Dutch section of the North Sea in 2020 which in general is thought to be required for the original target of 20% renewable energy as a fraction of the primary energy use in 2020. The current projection of renewable energy shows that all renewable options for electricity, heating and cooling, and transport have to be exploited and even up to their maximum practical limits based on current and envisioned renewable energy policies, in order to attain the current target within the European framework of 14% renewable energy as a fraction of the gross final energy use of the Netherlands in 2020. There are a few options that could provide some alternative, notably aquatic biomass, tidal power, and the so-called ‘Blue Energy’ technology (salinity gradient power). However, these options are still largely in the research and development stage and some have a more limited potential than offshore wind power. None of those options may pose a quantitative or cost-effective alternative to 6000 MW offshore wind in 2020.
