Samenvatting:
The paper is based on two studies conducted by ECN, namely a studyentitled 'An analysis of the West-European gas market: a company approach'
and another entitled 'Developments of gas markets across Europe' to be
published in November 1998. The paper addresses the past driving factors
responsible for the increasing share of gas in the EU energy demand.
Furthermore it very briefly discusses the rising dependency of the European
Union (EU) on gas imports from non-EU sources such as Russia and the expected
gas-to-gas competition in a large number of EU countries in the next decades.
