Samenvatting:
The goal of the WAELS project is to lay the foundations for the development of houses that are energy supplying on an annual basis. The project is financed by the EOS-LT program and is carried out by ECN, TNO and the Eindhoven University of Technology. In the 2 ½ year in which the project ran some important steps have been set in the development of three important elements of a concept for the energy-supplying house of the future. These elements are: Development of a building system, Efficient use of sunshine and Heat storage.
The project part Development of a building system has developed a list of so-called strategic boundary conditions by means of interviews with different stakeholders in the building chain and by a scenario –analysis. The strategic boundary conditions describe those aspects that refer to the realisation of energy supplying houses on a large scale and that are important, independent of which future scenario for the building chain will become real. It became clear that a blueprint for the energy supplying house of the future cannot be made. From the interviews with professionals in the building chain it becomes clear that the influence of project developer and contractor in the realisation process of the energy supplying house has to increase.
For the project part Efficient use of sunlight new multifunctional materials for combined PV-solarthermal collectors have been studied and three concepts for these devices have been developed and analysed. The materials have been compared through different experiments on coatings with various methods for application and on PVT cells. With these, the feasibility of the three concepts is investigated and one concept is selected as the most feasible. A detailed numerical model was developed, with which cells and modules can be optimised. For the PVT systems of 2015 and 2030 an inventory and sketches are made of some promising concepts, leading to a price-winning Bachelor thesis. With the work on PVT ECN has given important input to the work of the IEA SHC Task 35 on PVT Systems.
In the project part Thermal Storage, research was done into new materials that can store heat in a compact way and into the principle designs of components with which these materials can be charged and discharged. The proof of principle of heat storage in a salt hydrate with high heat storage capacity was given. A lot of knowledge was generated about the specifications and possibilities of salt hydrates as compact thermal storage material. A list of demands for the design of a compact thermal storage system was made and a description of three PhD research topics, in which a further deepening of the knowledge on compact thermal energy storage can be done. Regarding the development of a suspension reactor, the material that was initially selected as compact storage material proved not to be suited and some experiments were performed with a new material in suspension. Based on these measurements the dimensions of a storage system were determined. The work on compact thermal storage materials and systems was effectively brought into the IEA SHC Task 32 on Advanced Storage Technologies by ECN and TNO. Also, with this input the basis was laid for the new IEA Task in the field of Compact Thermal Energy Storage Materials and Systems (Task 42/24).
